Former World Championship Tour surfer Jake Spooner takes Over-40 division

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 3 November, 2014 -  The 2014 Tradies Surfmasters presented by the National Roads & Motorists' Association (NRMA) crowned all remaining shortboard champions today in three foot waves at North Cronulla.

Former World Championship Tour competitor Jake Spooner (Bulli) donned a competitive jersey for the Over-40 Mens division and proceeded to perform a barrage of his trademark carves on long righthand walls in the blue-ribbon final. As a result, Spooner was rewarded with a series of decent scores, which propelled him into the top position. Over-40 Mens runner-up Ricky Marshall (Cronulla) managed to perform a handful and giant backhand blasts over the course of the event, but ultimately failed to muster up the required scoreline to take the win.

Mark Tickle (Newport) made his journey over Sydney Harbour worthwhile, taking out the highly competitive Over-45 division. Tickle threw down some giant backhand whacks to post a series of respectable scores, which gave him a narrow lead over runner-up and local David Gall (Cronulla). Despite, Gall posting the highest individual wave score of the final (7.00), he was unable to find an all-important backup score and ultimately had to settle for second place.

Andrew Johnson (Bulli) took out the Over-50 Mens final with a healthy combination of speed and power. Johnson nabbed the win ahead of former World Championship Tour surfer Gary Green (Cronulla) who finished in second position.

Matt Hurworth (Cronulla) had a successful weekend in Cronulla, finishing in the runner up spot in yesterday’s Cronulla Boardriders "Nugget Memorial" event and then taking out the Tradies Retro division today. Hurworth took out both his respective Retro division finals with a series of solid eight point waves, which consequently gave him the upper hand against his opposition.

Local Cronulla surfer, John Lavers was the standout performer in the Over-55 Mens division taking down fellow local Wayne Tyte (Woolooware).

In the Over-60 Mens final, Wayne Roach (Merimbula) claimed victory over local surfer Kevin Hall (Sylvania). Both surfers managed to lock in scores in the above average range, but in the end it wasn’t enough to propel Hall into the top spot.
